(This letter and a birthday card was sent from mom and dad when they went south to Buckeye, Arizona for 1 month, Dec 26th to Feb. 2nd, 1997)
Dear Family,  We are having a relaxing, enjoyable time.  Visited the Mesa temple last Monday night and saw the beautiful lights (600,000).  They were so different from the Salt Lake temple lights.  The sister missionaries also presented a musical program.  It was really nice.  We plan on going to the big swap met today, then to the dog races tonight.  The weather has been really good, but is supposed to change for the weekend.  Hope Mandy is doing well in school and Zac in his wrestling.  Tell Landon to practice up on "chickenfoot" and we'll play it when I get home.  Take care of things in Morgan and don't you or Roger work too hard.  Have a really nice birthday.  Love Mom
P.S. We forgot to leave the cupboard doors open under the sink. Thanks again for everything.

March 16, 1997
Dear Bishop (John),   I just want you to know that  I know you will do a great job in the Stake Presidency,  and I know that President Bott was inspired to call you.  I'm so sorry that you won't be our Bishop anymore.  I cried most of the meeting today, because I didn't want to lose you as Bishop.  I would say these things in person to you, except that I would be too emotional.  You have been a great inspiration to me.  I will never forget how kind you were (and are) to Zac.  Even though he hadn't been coming to his meetings, you still let him be ordained a teacher.  He just knows (and I do too) that you care about him.  He was so nervous that day in sacrament meeting when he was to be called up.  It was so good that you called all the boys up together. (That really helped).  And then how good and kind you were to Zac, and how you complimented him on his hard work and helping his dad.  Roger is everything to Zac, and you couldn't have made Zac or me prouder than you did when you said the things you did that day.  I really feel a loss, and I'm going to miss you as our Bishop.  I know you are supposed to support and love all of the Bishop's you have, but I have never felt like a Bishop cared for me and my family like you have.  You have a special gift, and you are a special man.  You let those of us who aren't going to all our meetings, and doing all of the things we should, know that you still care about us and don't look down on us, and that  we are still loved by the Lord.
Sincerely, Gwen
