The house is up.  Gary Randall and his crew finished framing it today.  It is all framed.  It looks great.  It's bigger than I thought.  Tar paper is on the roof, and Rog has got plastic on the windows.  The exterior doors are in also.  The weather is still a mess and it looks as through the basement floor will have to be put off another week.  Bret Kimbal is getting the windows tomorrow, and we will probably put them in this weekend.  It is exciting, finally getting a house.  Work has been great lately.  The kids are growing up fast.  Amanda can ride a 2-wheel bike really good now, and she can read a mile a minute.  Zachary is so cute, sometimes he can really throw a fit, but he plays good with others, and up on the hill he's great.(Zac always loved to be outside when we were working on the house.  Even though he was only 4 1/2, he would play for hours in the dirt and sagebrush.  He would NEVER complain, or moan to go home.  He would help us pick up wood scraps.  He has always been such a helper)  I am happy and looking forward to the future.

May 9, 1986
Well, the house is all plumbed and the electrical work is being done now by Lynn Mickelsen and Roger.  I need to try harder and pray with more sincerity.  God is one of the few who can help me.  Sometimes, allot lately, I've been down so much.  I wonder if it has something to do with this being May, and I should have had the baby this month.  Maybe so.  My feelings are all jumbled up inside.  I don't know how to sort them out.

May 29, 1986
Well it's been awhile.  I have found much comfort in prayer these last 3 weeks and I am coming to know and trust and love the Lord more.  I am glad for all the blessings I have been blessed with.  I have so much to be thankful for.   I will always go on and try my best and trust in the Lord.  The house will start being bricked today.  Also, insulation has to go in because the sheetrock has to be up and finished this weekend because the tapers are coming Monday.  The electrical is also done.  Rog is working on the storage tank.

April 2, 1986 (This is a note Veloy wrote to Frank and Flora Tonks, her parents)
Dear Mom and Dad, just a note to let you know that we are all fine.  I caught a bug last week and was off work for two day (Tuesday and Wednesday) but took it easy, kept myself doctored up good, and am feeling fine now.  I felt a sore throat and stuffy head coming on Monday while I was at work and by Tuesday morning I was out of it.    I thought for sure I was going to end up with that darn cough, but it was gone by Friday.  We enjoyed having Mark and Wayne with us, but was sorry when they cut their visit short.  Like Mark said, all they really came for was the motorcycle and since they were both running short of money decided to go home early.  They also discovered that thing were quite crowded down here with the schools out for Easter vacation.  Erika and her friend Laurie Clay seemed to have a good time.  They went up to Hollywood Friday and then stopped at Universal Studios.  We had planned to got o Sea World Saturday, but Erika had an upset stomach and so we visited the Swap Meet and then Erika, Laurie and Tonya went to the Movieland Wax Museum  While they were gone I took a nice long nap (it really helped).  After supper we went down to Redondo Pier so Laurie could get some souvenirs.  Sunday we attended church and after dinner went to the beach where the girls waded in the ocean.  After another nap for all of us and supper, they left for Utah about 6:15 p.m.   Erika surely hated to leave and can hardly wait until this summer.  Tonya will be leaving today (Wednesday) before we get home from work with the Mutual for General conference in Utah.  She hopes to come up to Morgan either Friday or Saturday, but doesn't know what her plans are from there.  After attending conference on Sunday morning they will leave for California.  Erika brought Amanda's birthday present back with her.  We sure hate missing all of the family get togethers.  Lee and I both like it out here but are finding that we are getting anxious for the end of August to get here  Gwen told us that they have cleaned and tilled the garden, and of course Lee wishes he was back in Morgan for the planting season.  Mark should be well into college at Weber by now.  Hope thing works out for him.  We received a letter from El Camino college congratulating him on his fine work there and acknowledging him as an Honor Student.  We were really pleased and hope he will do as well at Weber.  He can do it if he will just keep up with his studies.  We haven't talked to Dixie and Paul since they got back from seeing the new baby.  I suppose if there had been any trouble with the earthquake and the volcano we would have heard about it.  I guess we won't be seeing you until the end of August as we have no leave accumulated until about then.  Take good care of yourselves and tell everyone HELLO!  We love both of you very much and miss you alot.  Love, Lee, Veloy and Tonya

(Approximately April 1986 - Lee Dickson sent a note to Gwen and Rog, telling them how to plant different things in the garden - He drew pictures and everything)

Potatoes - Make ditch with tiller, and furrower attachment.  After potatoes are up high enough so you do not bury them.

Corn - Space rows about 30 inches apart.  furrow made with hoe (space about 3-4 inches.  Thin to 6-8 inches after growing well.  Make the Furrow and drop seeds. Water furrow if ground is dry (before you put sees in)  Make a second furrow next to the first.  This will cover the seeds.  I have had trouble with root weevil.  In the storage shed on a shelf above the work bench is a plastic gallon jug with the insecticide in it.  There is also a pint bottle with holes punches in the lid.  The whole corn patch should not take over a cup (or less)  Use the pint bottle to sprinkle into 2nd furrow.  It must not be directly on seeds. (Be careful.  Do not breath dust.  It is very poisonous  Then fill furrow with rake. When corn is up, make shallow watering row by pulling dirt toward corn from either side with a rake.  You could wait till corn is up before applying the insecticide.  What ever suits you best.  Keep the kids away when you use the insecticide.

Peas - No more than 1 inch deep - spaced about 1 inch

Carrots - Barely covered - Keep damp till up.  Rows 24 inches apart

Good luck, Love, Dad

April 23, 1986
It's been too long since I've written.  We've started on the house.  The hole was dug April 8th, and then we got the footings in about the 11th.  Then it sat for a week of bad weather.  The foundation finally got done the 21st, and now we are leveling the basement dirt to lay the coils down and pour the basement floor, hopefully by the 28th or 29th, because Gary Randall is framing it the 30th of April.  It is sure hectic.  I still haven't lost any weight yet.  I need to start now.  I guess I don't have much incentive.  I have slacked off on reading the Doctrine and Covenants, but I'm gonna get back on track.   I will go on and try harder always and never give in or give up!!

April 29, 1986
Well, it rained all last week and we won't be able to get the basement poured before the house gets framed.  Neil Boyce back filled the front and sides today and also fixed the road a bit, and the culvert.  Hope this nice weather stays.  I made chicken noodle soup tonight and strawberry shortcake last night.  I was supposed to go to Inservice tonight, but Rog didn't get home in time.  I didn't really feel like going anyway.  I feel out of place with all the ladies.  They are not like me.  None of them work, and they all have husbands who are active in the church.  I don't really have any close girl friends outside of work.  Sometimes it's lonely.  But then I'm not really an outgoing person.  I'm hard to get close to.  I'm really insecure.  I shouldn't be, but that's just me.  I will try harder.   I'll go on always, and hope and pray I can do my best.  I need to if I want to be  happy forever.  Sometimes I feel so awful, so inadequate, not good enough.  But it's okay, I'll go on for as long as it takes.

March 1986 - from my journal

March 1986
Mary Ann Wilson was tending Zac, and Amanda?
1 - Went down to Solar place to check out the heating system we were thinking about putting in our home.
6 - R.B.J to check for carpet bids
7 - Zac to Doctor (Wallace)
13 - Reb shod (our horse)
19 - Dentist for kids
29 - Egg hunt at park

March 8, 1986
It's 2:00 a.m. I can't sleep.  Went to bed at 8:30 p.m. dead tired.  Woke up with a strange dream and can't go back to sleep.  Took Zac to the doctor for a rash on his face.  It's just an allergic rash that will supposedly go away with Benedryl.  Looked at some more brick at Interpace.  We like "Homestead"  This house is costing more and more.  I'll be glad when we finally get going on it.  I'm going to look at carpet today at R.B.J. in Henefer.  I am going to get back on my diet kick, and start exercising more and eating less.  In fact I think I'll do Jane Fonda's aerobic video now since I can't sleep.

March 9, 1986
It's 2:00 p.m.  36 hours since I last wrote.  I feel great!!  Went to Stake Conference today.  It was good!  The kids were pretty good.  Sometimes I get lonely and wish I could have some help and companionship at church.  But I will go on and never give up.  I'll just keep trying my best and try to teach my kids the gospel.  I have so much to learn myself.  Sometimes allot of the time I feel so inadequate.    I will never give up.  I will go on, my Heavenly Father loves me.  I am happy and joyful and content and at peace.  Everything will be okay and alright and things will work out just the way they should.

March 10, 1986
I just got done making cookies for work tomorrow.  It's Kent Porter's last day and we're bringing treats.  We went up to Henefer to R.B.J.'s and looked at carpet tonight.  Bid was $2,800.  We have almost got all our bids now.  I can hardly wait till I write in my journal that the house is finished!!  I am happy.  Happier than I have been in years.  I was in a good mood tonight.  Didn't get mad once.  Roger went to bed already. He's beat.  I should do my exercises.  I don't want to, but I need to get back in the swing.  Joan Adams had a baby girl 6 pounds 12 ounces last night.  This makes 1 boy and 3 girls.  They have their house sold  they hope.  Well I guess I'll read the Doctrine and Covenants.

March 11, 1986
I've had a sore throat, but I've been taking penicillin and I hope it's going away.  We found out that Precision Built Homes went out of business yesterday,  so we'll have to find someone to stick build  our house.  Rog is down talking to Gary Randall now. (He worked for Precision, and we heard that he was going to continue to stick build homes from Precision's plans) I am happy!! It's so nice to feel this way and have no shadows, no discomforts in the back of my mind.  I'm tired.  I think we'll all go to bed now.

March 16, 1986
Church went good today.  Kids were okay.  We have been writing out bills and bills and bills.  Roger is so depressed about it.  We will really be buried when we get the house payment.  I'll probably be working the rest of my life.  Everyone, it seems, is pregnant.  Joni is due in 2 weeks. (This was Keysto) I feel so empty sometimes.  But I'll just go on and never ever ever give up.   I hope and pray I can live right.  It seems all so impossible. I'm glad I'm praying now, but I need to get even closer.  Everything will be alright.  I will go on and never give up.  I've just got to do all I can to live my life right.

March 18, 1986
It's 5:20 a.m.  I'm tired!  I could use 12 hours of sleep a day.  I am re-washing dishes in the dishwasher.  I forgot to add soap last night.  Smart huh?  Also finishing up wash.  Amanda has a birthday party today for one of her friends.  We should be getting our tests back from Ford Chemical Lab very soon (water tests), then we go for the loan.  Things are hectic, but we'll make it.  Our family is tough!  Roger amazes me sometimes.  I hate to see him get so depressed about money.  We are paying our tithing now and things always do seem to work out.  Amanda is reading pretty good in school now and Zac is getting cuter and talking better everyday.  I called Sally Little last night and she says she would tend Zac and Ladd Peterson  and Angie Peterson this fall if they don't move back to Pocatello. (Ladd and Angie are Kelee and Roger Peterson's kids.  It seems that they have shared the same baby-sitter with Zac quite a bit) That would be great!  Well, I'm gonna close now and say my prayers before 5:30.

March 19, 1986
Today has been a great day!!   Tonight was kinda bad for awhile.  I did 5 sinks full of dishes. I don't like to cook supper at all.  It's hard to come home and not know what to fix and ask, "What do you want?" and be told "I don't care".  And then whatever I do fix, the kids detest.  No wonder I have such a bad attitude about my cooking.  Kids went to the dentist today.  No cavities.  The dentist says Mandy is very intelligent.  Rog took them.  I'm gonna do Jane Fonda's aerobic video starting tonight and every morning.  I've gotta lose 10 pounds.

March 25, 1986
We checked on loans yesterday.  We will probably borrow $57,000 at 11% interest from The First National Bank of Morgan.  Our payments will be approximately $688.00 for 20 years.  But we will hopefully only use $50,000 or $51,000.  If we borrow $50,000 at 11% interest payments will be $579.00 per month for 20 years (That's what we did)  That's not too bad.  I hope interest rates go down some more.  We need to decide whether to lock in now or take a construction loan and close out later.  Morgan Bank will work with us really good.  The Ogden banks require so much, such as 100% finished construction on the house and $2,000-$3,000 closing costs.  I know Morgan will work with us better.  I hope everything goes okay.  It's scary.  Maybe by this time next month we will be started.  Hope so.  Life is an experience. Bad and good.  I will make it.

March 29, 1986 (postcard)
Dear Mandy and Zac,  We saw these people from "The Wizard of Oz" at the was museum.  They looked pretty real!  Did you have a fun Easter?  I sure did!  Well, tell you mom and dad hello for me; and take good care of Mark.  See you soon, probably around April 9th sometime!  See you later!  Love, Erika

March 30, 1986
Easter Egg hunt today.  Zac got 3 numbered eggs.  He gave one to Amanda and one to Jared.  The kids sure have been lucky on the Easter hunts so far.  I cleaned out the raspberries in dad's garden today, and Roger went horseback riding.  The Easter Bunny has left eggs already for the kids.  It's 1:30 a.m.  Easter program at church tomorrow.  I get to play the piano for the kids to sing.  Zac will be getting a new babysitter Monday.  Sally Little.  Amanda is now going to Kendra George's.  I need to get a girl for summer.   I want to be a good mom and wife.  I need to try harder.  I will not give up, ever.  I will GO GO GO.  I am happy. I am okay.

March 31, 1986
Today was great.  Our loan went through.

February 1986 - from my journal

14 - Started pill again
17 - Grandpa's birthday

February 2, 1986
Well, I have just finished going over the family home evening lesson.  It is titled, " I AM A CHILD OF GOD."  These lessons are good for me as well as the kids.  It's hard sometimes to comprehend that all the children in the world, all the people ever born, even all the millions and billions of people, are all Heavenly Father's children, and he knows every one. Each one was born to him and our Heavenly Mother as spirit children.  It is hard to understand, but our knowledge is so limited and when the millennium comes, there will be an explosion of knowledge and we'll be able to understand and comprehend things that we can't now.  I am trying to understand and believe that God loves me.  I need to gain a stronger testimony.  I will try and never give up and hope that God will be merciful to me.  I will keep praying and trying to improve myself and my testimony and pray and hope that I can achieve eternal life in the Celestial Kingdom.

February 4, 1986
Today was a great day.  I am truly happy.  I went to breakfast with some of my friends at work.  We are going once a month for breakfast for all the ones who have birthdays that month.  Arlene Christensen and I had them in January.  Work went well.  I have written to the government for applications to apply at H.A.F.B (Hill Air Force Base).  There are four announcements open until February 28, 1986.  Our house plans are going no where.  Roger doesn't seem to want to get going.  I'm gonna quit bugging him.  It just causes contention.  Rog and Amanda are in bed.  So is Mark.  Zac and I are watching The Empire Strikes Back.  I'm reading the Doctrine and Covenants and exercising and writing in my journal.  Zac is practicing writing his name. I found a scripture in the D & C that I just love.  It is:    D & C Section 88  Verse 63.

Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you;  seek me diligently and ye shall find me; ask and ye shall receive; knock and it shall be opened unto you.

This comforts me.  I want to draw unto the Lord and be near to Him.  I know He loves me and I will keep going and trying and never give up.  I want to be happy through the eternities and I want this for Roger and my kids also.  I learned a new word, "felicity"  it means "great happiness"  I know that if a person lives the way they should they can have this felicity FOREVER.  I know Heavenly Father answers prayers.  I've never really prayed for an answer before that I needed really bad.  But I did the other night and I waited and listened, REALLY LISTENED for an answer and I received one.  As clear as can be a still small voice came into my mind and repeated over and over words that brought so much comfort to my soul.  I know Heavenly Father is watching over me and LOVES me.  I will go on and never never never give up.

February 9, 1986
I wish I could write more in my journal.  I sure do wish allot.    I know that it's all up to me.  I'm the one in charge of my destiny.  Sometimes I get down, but I pull myself up and keep on going and trying and never ever am I going to give up.  Things will all work out.  I'm glad there is forever.  It's okay.  Everything will be alright.  We went to church today.  It was a good day.  Started out great!!  Kids love to pay their tithing.  Roger and I are paying ours also.  I made an apple pie and roast and vegetables for dinner.  Should have been called apple mush.  I'm about 10 pounds overweight.  Tomorrow is D-day. (Diet Day)

February 11, 1986
I feel as though my life is back on the right track.  It's taken me 25 years to finally realize how I can be eternally happy.  These last 10 years have been rough for me spiritually, but I'm pulling myself up and out of the fog.  I may get down, and I won't dwell on my shortcomings, there are so many it's depressing.  I'm going to be optimistic and never give up.  I hope God will be merciful.  I need to try harder with my kids.  To teach them patience, and kindness, and that God is near and listens and answers prayers.  I have many things to be thankful for.

February 19, 1986 - Letter from Mom in California

Dear Gwen, Roger and kids,

Sorry I have been so slow in writing you.  I have been extra busy at work trying to get everything caught up and in order.  I'm still working on it.  On Wednesday (Jan. 22nd)  I spent most of the day in orientation and am now a permanent Hughes employee.  I have been taking a computer class the past three weeks (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced), and hope it will help me with my work on the Systel (the name of the computer I work with).  I really enjoy my work.  The people here are really nice to work with, and are so helpful and thoughtful.  I haven't met any other L.D.S. people in the office, so guess there aren't any.  I just got a new IBM Wheelwriter 5 typewriter (electronic). It is sure beautiful and I am really getting spoiled.

Dad has been given a new project at work that should keep him busy until September.  He is happy for this.  At least he now has something that he can really get involved in.  He is still teaching the High Priests and doing Home Teaching.  He has been given a new family (a mother and her two sons -- 12 & 14)  They were baptized last week, and Dad was one of the speakers at the baptism.  They're from the San Francisco area.  We picked them up a couple of Sunday's ago and took them to church as their car had broken down.  This will give him a total of four, as one of his other families just moved to the Anaheim area.

We are surely getting our eyes opened out here on the way people live.  To so many, it seems that their families mean very little to them.  The people that we work with have such different life styles than ours, and so many have been divorced or are not married and don't plan to marry.  There is allot of inactivity in the church, but maybe it is just the area we are living in (down close to the beach).

I'm really enjoying teaching the Cultural Refinement lessons in Relief Society.  I met with a member of the Stake Presidency last week to have my temple recommend signed.  We haven't been to the temple for endowments yet, but have been for sealings a couple of times.

We had Stake Conference last weekend.  Dad gave the closing prayer and did very fine.  I sang in the Relief Society Choir. I'm glad Erika was there to sit with Tonya.  Mark very conveniently forgot his church clothes.  We finished Tonya's quilt for her New Beginnings Program and it really turned out beautiful.  She is very proud of it and had allot of compliments.

Tonya has found herself a very close girlfriend, and the two of them are inseparable.  Michelle Powell is in the same grade, but a little older than Tonya.  She is quite the talker, and is larger than Tonya, but they get along great.  She and Tonya are both officers in the Key Club and are trying to get everything worked out for a convention that is coming up in April.  The two of them have also signed up to be candy stripers at the hospital that is over by Tonya's school  (they work on Sunday afternoons).  The  semester finished a couple of weeks ago, but we haven't gotten Tonya's grades.  I hope we won't be surprised too much.

We had the missionaries over for dinner (supper to us).  There are two assigned to our ward and two to another ward, but they are all living together at the present time so we invited all four of them over.  Tonya didn't know how she was going to like it, but she found out that they were  just as normal as the rest of us, and things went very well.  They are from Northern England, Ohio, Idaho, and Sandy, Utah, (but originally from Los Angeles).  I cooked a turkey (the one we received from Hughes for Christmas), and they really seemed to enjoy it.

We had a good time at Disneyland when Hughes and General Motors had their merge party.  Dad and I went on a few of the rides and looked at the cars they had on display.  Tonya and Michelle went their way, and also had a good time.  We had a nice meal, compliments of Hughes, and a relaxing evening, even if it did go until 1 a.m.  It was sure hard to get up the next morning and go to work.

In spite of the rainy weather, things are beautiful down here.  We went for a short ride a week ago and enjoyed seeing the flowers that are beginning to bloom (petunias, roses, pansies, etc.).  Dad and I stopped at a store with a garden shop and noticed all the veg. plants and flowers they have that are ready for planting.  Dad didn't say much, but I'm sure he will miss gardening this summer.  I'll bet you and Roger won't.

Our Stake Center is scheduled to be torn down this next week now that stake conference is over.  We have three wards meeting in our church house, but two more will be added as soon as the state center is no longer available.  The two extra wards should only be with us for a couple of months until the Lawndale Stake Center is completed and then they will go there.

We are all fine and hate to see the time passing so fast.  Tonya has mixed emotions--she loves it down here and doesn't want to leave, but as soon as she hears from someone back in Morgan she wishes she was there.  Dad and I are really enjoying it and are tempted to stay if everyone wasn't in Morgan (and of course he has the commitment with the college).

We are glad Mark and Erika came down.  Dad hated to call them and tell them not come, but he has turned into such a worrier.  Thank goodness the weather turned out better than we expected.  We were so surprised to hear that you are having so much trouble with the water in Morgan.  It is bad in places here in California, but it hasn't bothered us yet.

Mark told us that Amanda has lost some teeth.  Is she having a hard time eating?  Hope she is over her colds by now.  How was Zac's graduation from Mrs. Peterson's Nursery School?  Have you or Roger heard anything from Hill Field yet?

Saturday night our ward is having a progressive dinner (about 50 people will be involved).  They are going to begin and end at our place.  Thank goodness I don't have to feed all of them, just furnish a pie.  Tonya doesn't know where we are going to put all of them, but I told her we could all just stand.  We are planning on going to Palm Springs next Saturday, March 1st.

Well, guess I had better close so I can get this letter in the mail before another week goes by. We love you all very much, and wish you could be with us again for a visit.  See you in six months.

Love Mom and all

February 20, 1986
Well I'm kinda slacking off on my writing.  I've been so tired lately.  I think it's the "Pill" I'm taking.  It's supposed to make your body think it's pregnant and I'm always tired when I'm pregnant.  I think I'll try it for another month, then if I'm still dragging, then I'll try something else.  We had a nice Valentines.  Rog and the kids sent me flowers.  The kids had fun passing out their valentines.  Mark and Erika went to California over the weekend.  There has been really bad flooding in Morgan on the 17, 18, 19th.  The county has been declared a disaster area.  Peterson Creek, Deep Creek and Hardscrabble Creeks were hardest hit.  Wilkinson's reservoir was in danger of breaking.  It's a third as big as East Canyon.  The worst is over now.  Poor Uncle Norris and Grandpa and Grandma Dickson's place has been a river.  Grandma's brother Golden Porter died Sunday the 16th of February 1986. (Grandma had to be carried by men from her front porch to the car on the street because of the water that was running through the yard)  We went and looked at Stan and Sue Rees' house tonight.(They have hot water heat running through tubes in the floor, and we were thinking of doing the same thing.  Their's is powered by a boiler and solar panels.  Our plan was to have ours be powered by a water jacket in a wood -burning stove)  Saturday we are going to a Solar place in Salt Lake City.  We are getting our bids together now for our new house.  Work is going fine.  Boring sometimes, but fine.  I've sent in applications to H.A.F.B.  If I can get a "4" (grade-wise) I might take it.  Sometimes I feel as though I'm on a roller coaster.  Basically I'm happier now than I have been in years.  But I long for more happiness and joy.  I CAN have all I want.  It is possible.  I just need to live my life as best I can.  I won't ever give up.  I pray God will love me and forgive my sins.  I hope and pray I am worthy enough to reach the Celestial Kingdom.  I want to do what's right.

Today I stayed home from work.  I was up all last night with Zachary.  He had a bad ear ache.  He was fine today though.  It has been beautiful weather just like April, and it's only February.  It will be a real bummer to go back to winter.  We took a water sample down to Weber Basin for testing today.  We'll know the results tomorrow.  We are getting all our bids collected and it looks as though we will borrow $50,000, plus put down $8,000 of dad's money.  We still need excavating, appliances, cabinets, carpets, linoleum, heating and cement work bids.  All of these together can't  go over $17,000.  I took off work yesterday for a few hours and we went to Precision Built Homes, Artistic Woodcrafting (for cabinets), Interstate Brick and Pioneer Door.  Hope we can get everything squared away in another month and apply for the loan.  Haven't heard anymore from H.A.F.B.  I liked staying home today.  I could get used to it really easy.  I hope I don't have to work full time for the rest of my life.  I want 2 more children.  I feel so empty at times. I would have been 6 1/2 months pregnant by now WOW!!! (if I hadn't miscarried)  Life goes on.  I am happy.   I want to be closer to my Heavenly Father and gain a stronger testimony.  I need to be kinder and more patient with my family and give my kids and husband the love and attention they deserve and need.  I have to STOP putting myself first.

January 1, 1986
Today was a pretty fun day.  We went up to Clark's Dry Farm, and went snomobiling and sleigh riding.  It wasn't too cold, but it snowed most of the time.  Rog got home at 7:30 this morning after working all night.  He slept till about noon, then we got ready and went up to Clark's.  Joni and Kerry and Megan went. Also Kelly Rich and Kimlyn Porter (Kerry's sister).  We had 4 snowmobiles.  Haven't done much else, except  wash clothes and, bake some Rhodes bread.  Back to the grind tomorrow.  Roger's last day is Friday as far as we know.  Hope he's on the schedule for next week.  Wish I didn't have to worry about it.  We need to get started on house plans and bids.  It has to be done, but neither of us wants to think about it.  Still haven't got any bids on the car.  We wrecked it on Christmas.  Had a head on collision with Kirk Tonks on the one lane road above Como Springs going to Round Valley.  We had come to a complete stop, and Kirk was traveling much too fast and couldn't stop.  He slid on the icy road and slammed into us.  No one was hurt. We had to hike back to Dan and Carol Wilkinson's home to call mom and dad who were up to Grandma Tonks'.  The cop did not specify which one of us was at fault, even though we were stopped completely when he slammed into us.  Therefore our insurance had to pay to get our car fixed.  If the frame is bent, we'll have to total it out.  Hope so, kinda.  Chevy has 7 1/8% financing, and we could probably get into a new car pretty reasonable.  I'm not as UP today as I have been.  I know why.  Tomorrow morning I'll feel better.  I know for sure.  I guess there will always be down days, and as long as they don't happen too often, that's okay.  I need to try harder and not take the Lord's name in vain when I get upset.   I hope so bad that I can live a good life so I can get what I really want and need for all eternity.

January 2, 1986
Tonight I got out my personal progress journal that I got when I was teaching the young women (Beehives) in the Milton Ward 7 years ago.  It has allot of neat things in it, and I'm going to set goals and achieve them.  I was just reading through it, and I found another important goal I need to do.  Fast.  I've never ever really done this, not since I was a little girl, and that wasn't on my own either.  I want to memorize the Articles of Faith again also.  I'm not going to write much tonight.  I've got other things on my mind.  Maybe I"ll get back to this later if I can.  I do know that everyday my resolve to be a better person and a worthy daughter of God grows stronger.  Achieving eternal life and all the blessings that come with it has never been such a strong desire in my life.  I will go on and never, never, never give up.  I will have these feelings forever, so I must take care of them and nurture them so they may grow even stronger than they are now.

January 3, 1986
Boy this is hard sometimes. I'm beat.  It's a good thing I read the scriptures this morning.  I got my hair lightened tonight and went grocery shopping and got a pizza at Como with the kids.  Rog is down in Salt Lake City to the Salt Palace watching mud races or something like that.  The kids are in bed and I am lonely.  I need to perk up and not be sad.  I need to look to the future.  I need to try harder.

January 5, 1986
Well, I missed writing yesterday, but I'm gonna keep this up.  You know it's hard to be UP all the time.  Today was good and bad.  We started church at 9:00 a.m. this morning.  I like that, but it's harder getting up and reading.  I'm playing the piano full time instead of teaching.  I think I'll like this.  I wrote little notes and attached treats for the kids I taught these past months in my class.  I really enjoyed them.  We stayed to Sacrament meeting,  the kids and I.  Pauline and Shane Preece blessed their baby (must have been the 2nd girl, I can't remember her name) and Grandpa and Grandma Dickson were there so that helped.  The kids were really pretty good.  Roger was supposed to come up and meet us, but he didn't wake up.  He was still asleep when we got home. It doesn't really matter.  I ought to be used to it.  It's hard sometimes.  I can really let myself get down and depressed, but I know this isn't good for me.  I need to be optimistic and look to the future.  I need to try harder to be a good mother.  Today all Mandy and Zac did was back talk and fight, and I get so tired of it all.  I'm not a super mom, sometimes I'm really rotten.  I was today.  I yelled allot and I need to not criticize as much.  Especially with Amanda.  What can I do, but go on, and try harder.  I love my kids, but my patience needs a great deal of improvement.  I wish I had more time in the day, or wish that I didn't get so tried and need so much sleep.   I would read more, but I'm lucky if I get my journal wrote in, and a few scriptures read.  I need to be happier and more content.  Today has been a down day for me.  I hope tomorrow is better.  I'll keep trying to do what is right, and live the way I should, and pray and ask God to help me.

January 6, 1986
I wish I had more time to do all the things I need and want to do.  I want to take that "Know Your Religion" class on Wednesday nights for 12 weeks, but it's held down in Peterson, and I can't go down that far.  I guess I could, but it would be hard and Roger wouldn't support me.  I think I'll call Colleen Morgan and see if she can tell me more about it.  Arlene Christensen, my boss at Browning, went last year.  I feel I need to learn more about the church, and if somebody could explain it, it would help me allot.  Today went pretty good.   My boss gets on my nerves and I think after Zac gets in school, maybe even sooner, I'll try and get on at H.A.F.B. or somewhere else.  Maybe McKay-Dee.  I think I'll ask Pauline Green about that next time we visit teach her.  I need to call her and set it up.  I need to try harder to be more patient with the kids.  I also forgot to pray this morning.  But I'll keep on going and trying and improving and bettering myself.  I must.  For I want to achieve eternal life and exaltation.

January 7, 1986
Only 2 more days, and then I'll be 25 years old. A quarter of a century.  It is hard, but I must work harder to improve myself so I can reach the Celestial Kingdom.  I want this so bad.   Sometimes I wonder how it will all end up.  If it really is possible that I could live good enough to make it, or if it's an unreachable goal.  I am not strong, and it is hard for me most of the time.  But what can I do but go on, and try harder.  Before, I have given up, and just thought there's no way I can make it ever.  But I know Heavenly Father loves me and listens when I pray to Him.  And He wants me to live so that I can come back to Him.  He really does, and when He judges me, He won't be unduly harsh, but He will do it fair.  It shouldn't be hard.  I know what is right and wrong.  I need to stop swearing.  I no longer take the Lord's name in vain.  I don't lie, but I need to work harder at keeping my thoughts clean.  Heavenly Father says no unclean thing can be in his presence, and with some of the things I've done and said and experienced and seen, I find it hard to believe that  He could ever see me as clean and pure.  But I'm going to read the Miracle of Forgiveness and pray and repent, I want no ghosts in my past.  I want to be morally clean.  I love my family.  I wish we could all have eternal life.  I hope I can teach my kids the correct principles.  I have so much to learn also.  I need to teach them to pray and  know Heavenly Father listens and hears and answers their prayers.  I will work on teaching them this, this coming week.  I am happy, although our life is busy and hectic.  I know if we can get through this year the worst will be over ( I'm referring to building the house)  I want to live life good, so no good thing will be withheld.

January 10, 1986
I missed 2 days of writing.  It's going to get harder because Rog is back on at work and he likes to go to bed early and bed is awful hard to resist for me.  He was layed off last Friday, but they did it wrongfully, so he filed an grievance with the Union and the Company had their backs up to the wall so they gave him his job back.  That put his friend Perkins to another job in Sanitation.  There were allot of hard feelings, but about 90% of the people were on Roger's side.  The right side.  He was doing this (the grievance)  just to get what the Company owed him.  Yesterday was my birthday, and it was nice.  Everything is going to work out.  My mind is full of thoughts spinning around.  I can't write them all down, though I want to.  Everything in this life will all work out.  Eternity is forever and ever with no end.  I want to be happy.  I need to live my life right and good so I can have every good thing and nothing will be withheld.  I love my family, I want to be with them through the eternities.

January 10, 1986 - Letter from Mom in California

Dear Gwen, Roger & kids,

Just a note to let you know that everything is fine.  The holiday season came and went so fast, and here it is the middle of January almost.  We are all back in the groove and looking forward to our next break.  Mark is through with school next week and is planning on coming to Morgan as soon as possible (probably the end of next week).  Dad is trying to get the Toyota fixed up with new tires, etc., so Mark can bring it to Utah.  I guess we will just do with one car and hope that things work out.  It should.  Mark is still doing very well in school and just hopes that he doesn't blow his final exams next week.
Tonya has been working a little bit, but not as much as before, thank goodness.  She is surely going to miss Mark when he leaves.  She and I are in the process of making her a quilt..  She told her Mutual teacher that she was making one and they want her to display it for the "New Beginnings" program in a couple of weeks (January 19).  She failed to tell her teacher that she hadn't started it yet.  I think you can guess what we will be doing this weekend.

We had an enjoyable time while Erika was here.  On Monday, December 30, we all went to Magic Mountain for a fun day.  It was exciting but with the log ride and river run we got wet about three times.  We talked Mark into one last ride on the river run ( or rapids) and wouldn't you know-- he ended up getting soaked!  He was a really good sport about it.  Tuesday, I drove Erika and Tonya ( and one of Tonya's friends from school) up to Pasadena where we worked on the elephants for the Rose Parade.  It was quite an experience and one I am glad we had the opportunity to do.  Wednesday morning we boarded the bus in the Hughes parking lot at 6 a.m. and headed for the parade.  We arrived there about 7 a.m. and found the grandstand.  It was toward the end of the parade route, therefore the parade didn't reach us until about 9:20 a.m.  We really enjoyed it, although the weather never did really warm up.  After the parade we went home and picked up Mark and then drove to Dixie and Paul's home for dinner.  David and Angela and their children were there.  We had a delicious dinner and nice visit.  Their two children, Paul and Erin, are sure growing up fast.  It took them a little while to warm up to us, but after that we were their best friends.

On Thursday, Dad & I returned to work and Mark went to College.  Erika and Tonya drove up to the Hollywood/Burbank area, and after seeing a few famous places went to the NBC Studios for a tour.  Friday, after Mark returned from his classes at college, the three of them went to the Movieland Wax Museum.  We were all too tired Friday night to got to the movies, so we just relaxed at home.  Saturday was just a lazy day. Dad did some running around, Tonya had to work, Mark studied off and on, Erika relaxed, and I laid around and did as little as possible as I didn't feel too good.  A touch of the flu with a little sore throat. I started to cough some and was so afraid I would get my yearly cough, but thank goodness I'm okay now.  I stayed home from church on Sunday while Dad, Tonya and Erika went.

Erika's plane trip was something else.  We made it to the airport in good time but once we got there what a traffic jam.  Lee finally let Erika and me out to get her tickets while he found a place to park. To make a long story short, her plane was to leave at 9:25 p.m. and it left at 11:15 p.m.  What a night!  She called the next day and said that by the time she had picked up her luggage and rode home that it was 3 a.m.  Chris picked her up from the airport.

This week everything is back to normal, but we sure do miss everyone.  I sure hope Grandpa gets feeling better and those darn dizzy spells go away.  I know they must be a worry to him and to Grandma, too.  He has had a couple of doctor appointments but they haven't found the cause of his problem.

I am typing this letter during my lunch at work.  I type it on the typewriter keyboard, but it goes directly into my computer.  After I am finished (and hopefully  have corrected all of my errors), I print it out using my typewriter as the printer.  It looks pretty nice doesn't it?  I have typed a couple of papers for Mark for school, which is really helpful.  Hope I don't get fired for doing it.

I  don't know yet if Hughes is going to hire me on permanent or not.  They interviewed someone for the job (because of policies and procedures) but she didn't work out.  I haven't heard yet what they plan to do.  The only hang up might be that I would be quitting in September.  Whatever happens will be okay with me, although I do hate to have to learn another job.  The people here are really nice to work with and it is quite handy to come to work with Dad.

I looks like we will be going to Disneyland next week.  General Motors, who purchased Hughes, is throwing a welcoming party for all of the Hughes employees and their immediate families.  They have reserved Disneyland for one week (evenings) and the employees will be given tickets to get in free.  I told Dad here is his chance to finally ride on Space Mountain.  He hasn't been to Disneyland since we came out here this time.

We were so glad to hear that Roger is working again.  When Mark told us about it, I wouldn't believe him.  It just sounded like one of his stores that he is always trying to put over on me for a good laugh.  I knew it wasn't like Roger to make any big waves, especially like Mark was leading us to believe. (This is probably the time that the bakery abolished Perkins job in shipping, and they wanted him to bump Roger, and have Roger go to sanitation.  This was illegal, and Rog had to have the Union  go to bat for him, to help him to hold onto his job.  It was quite uncomfortable for awhile.)

I don't envy you with the cold and snow back there in Utah.  Yesterday, during lunch, I went outside with one of the girls I work with.  She purchased a hamburger that they were grilling in a little refreshment area outside.  The sun was shining so beautiful and it was so nice and warm.  I just seems terrible that Utah can't have some of this lovely weather.

Guess I had better close for now.  Is Amanda feeling better, or did you have to take her to the doctor?  How is Zac and his He Man characters getting along?  I am also writing to the Grandparents, so you will probably all know the about the same thing.  Take care of things and especially yourselves.  We miss you all allot.  Love Mom

January 12, 1986
Today was Sunday.  The kids and I walked to church.  It was so cold.  Hopefully the car will be fixed tomorrow.  We even stayed for Sacrament meeting.  I'm going to stay from now on.  Errol Nelson talked on teaching your children the gospel.  It really makes me want to try harder.  There is so much I  need to teach them, and it's my responsibility.  It will be on my head if they don't know.  We need to start having family home evening and quit watching so much TV.   I love my family.  I really do.  I must always put them first.  I need to try harder and never, never, never give up.  I must go on!!  I can't stop my feelings.  The price is too great to pay, the promises and riches too great to lose.  I must do what is right.  I can't screw up.  I will be okay.  I will overcome.  I was reading in the church section of the newspaper about the Beatitudes in the Bible.  Here are some that apply to me and I will memorize this week.

I need help. I can't do it alone.  "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.

I'm really hurting, but I'm going to bounce back.  "Blessed are those that mourn, for they shall be comforted"

I really want to do the right thing "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied"

I've got to let faith grow in me. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

I need help and I hurt sometimes.  But I want to be happy.  I am.  I need to have more faith and believe that everything's going to work out just the way we want it to.  Just the way it should.  Everything's going to be alright.  I'm tough.  It will be worth it.  It is worth it.

January 16, 1986
Just a quick note this morning.  We got our car back last night.  Finally.  I looks great!  Monday night Rog and I went to Ogden and I got a skirt and sweater and earrings.  We ate at  Berconi's and saw "White Knights" with Mikhail Berishnikof.  It was good.  Tomorrow night I'm getting my nails done (Solar) $25.00.  I'm doing fine.   Work went well yesterday.  Hope today goes as good.

January 19, 1986
Mark came home from California Friday to live with us and find work and go to Weber State College in March.  I hope he can find work.  Zac was sick last night, so I got a baby-sitter for him while I went to church.  I didn't stay to Sacrament meeting.  I fixed enchiladas today with moosemeat burger.  Mark and Beth Graves (his girlfriened) are going skiing tomorrow.  Well I better close.  I'm still praying and reading the Doctrine and Covenants and paying tithing.  I need to work on family home evening harder.  It seems the TV is on all the time.  It needs to go off.  We need to spend more time together as a family.  I keep thinking if we can get through this year and get our house built it will get better.  I just need to keep close to the Lord.  I feel better when I do.  I guess I'm a basically insecure person.  I need to be reassured allot.  I'm going to try so hard to live a good life so that I can have eternal life in the Celestial Kingdom.

January 20, 1986 - Letter from Tonya in California

Dear Gwen, Rog & kids!  Hi!  What's up?  Anything fun?  How is it to have Mark back?  I bet you wish it was me !!  ha-ha  Gwen, how's work going?  How are you feeling?  Guess what!  I changed my hair-style again!  But, I'm going to get it cut again sometime this week!  (Can you believe me?)  Roger, How are you doing?  Good I hope!  How's work?  I haven't talked to you since you got back on, so congrats!!  (A little late, huh? )  Well, last but not least!  Kids, how are you doing?  I hope you're both feeling well!  Mandy, how's your reading coming?  When you get another book, you'll have to call and read it to me!  Zac, How's your chicken coming?  Has it hatched yet?  HA HA  Do you like your pre-school?  Well, it's been hot down here lately!  88 degrees on Saturday!  So, I'm trying to work on a new tan!  I miss you all !  Hope you'll w/b soon!  I love ya, Love, Tonya (Little Sis and Aunt, don't forget)

January 24, 1986
Well this week hasn't gone very well at all.  I'm glad it's almost over.  It's a good thing I can go and kneel and ask Heavenly Father to help me.  A month ago I wouldn't have been able to, but it's a real comfort to be able to now.  I want to do what is right.  I want to live my life right and do everything  I should so that I can be happy throughout the eternities.  I love my family.  Roger asked me last night if I really did.  I guess I've been so mixed up inside this past week.  I really do though, and I need to show them more.  This life is hard, and the next few years until the millennium comes will even be harder.  But I am so grateful, my eyes and heart have been opened.  I'm close to God.  Closer than I have ever been.  I want to do what is right, so no good thing will be withheld.  I know Heavenly Father loves me and wants what is best for me.  I must live my life, as it IS what I have made for myself.  But things will work out.  I know they will.

January 25, 1986
Today has been great!!  I have reasoned out allot of mixed up feelings I have had.  I feel much better.  I pray Heavenly Father knows the desires of my heart even when my feelings are in turmoil and uncertain.  I know what I must do.  I will try my hardest to do my best.  I must do what is right.  I must control my thoughts and feelings at all times.   I love my family and I want us to be together through the eternities in the presence of God.  I know I have made mistakes in the past, but you learn from mistakes, and I can do nothing but go on.  I am happy and loved and tired (ha-ha).  I'm going to do my best and love my best and trust Heavenly Father to take care of me, and everything will work out fine.  Mark got on at Marie Callenders. (a restaurant- he was a busboy)  He likes it allot.  Grandma Dickson invited us out for lunch tomorrow.  Roger took Uncle Don's dog to the rabies clinic today.  I cleaned house and washed clothes, Also washed the drapes and blinds in the kids room and in the bathrooms.  Better say my prayers and hit the hay.

January 26, 1986
Today was a very good day.  I felt Heavenly Father's Spirit in our home and in me.  We went to church and sacrament meeting.  The kids took their tithing to the Bishop.  They were so proud.  Roger has also started paying his tithing without any prodding from me.  I'm glad.  He has such potential, he is a good man.  I hope he can realize the importance of the gospel in our lives.  I want him to be happy forever also.  I love my kids.  I want to teach them right and help them to know Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers.  I just finished reading Joseph Smith's account of the glories of all the kingdoms in heaven in D & C Section 76.  It makes me want to try harder.  I want to be a part of the Celestial Kingdom.  I want this for my family.  I'm so glad Ambure has already attained this.  This life is challenge, but I will go on, never ever giving up ever.  I know Heavenly Father will bless me and take care of me if I follow Him and His teachings.  I have so many blessings.  I am so thankful.

January 31, 1986
Boy this week has gone by fast.  It seems I have no time for the things I want to do.  I wish every day was 30 hours long and all I needed to sleep were 4-5 hours.  Maybe then I could juggle working and housework and being a mom a and wife and having time to myself.  I seem so tired all the time.  By 6 or 7 at night, I'm ready for bed and I can't drag myself out at 5:00 a.m.  I think I need more exercise.  Starting Monday, I'm going to get with it.  I need to lose 10 pounds.  I am content and happy.  I love my family.  I want to live right and teach my children about God and the gospel so they can be happy for eternity.  I need to try harder.  I want to be a daughter that Heavenly Father can be proud of.  I need to watch my temper and have patience.  I need to spend more time with the kids, instead of letting the TV be baby-sitter.  I need to be unselfish with my time and give to my children.
