July 2006

Young Women August News Article – written by Gwen on July 30, 2006

During July, we went to Girl’s Camp at Zarahemla in Porterville.  This is one of the highlights of our year.  The friendships and sisterhood which was built at camp, was a joy to behold.  As part of camp, we attended Illuminate University, and the Morgan 6th Ward was the College of Humanities – or LOVE.  We had the opportunity to recite “The Living Christ” twice each day, and build upon our theme for the year, which is, “Arise and Shine Forth, that your Light may be a Standard to the Nations”.

The first afternoon at camp we had the girls who will be coming in Young Women’s next year, come and participate in the activities.  Morgan Streadbeck, Jessica Streadbeck, Jordan Billock, and Natalie Mecham had an enjoyable afternoon and evening, and I don’t think they will even have to think twice about attending camp come next year, they LOVED it !.

On Wednesday, we hiked and hiked and hiked in the morning, and played and played and played in East Canyon Creek in the afternoon. We also built a water slide on the hill above Zarahemla Lodge, which was approximately 120 feet long and 25 feet wide, and it was a sight to behold girls and leaders, eight abreast, throwing themselves full-tilt down the mountain.

On Thursday we had an enjoyable afternoon, with the Relief Society Sisters sponsoring different “stations” where we could learn the art of making pies, literacy, hair and make-up, crafts, flower arranging, outdoor cooking, etc.  Thanks to Sister Marie Adams, Sister Harvey and grand-daughter Sara, Sister Nelson, Sister Amy Hansen, for providing such a relaxing atmosphere, and FUN FUN stories.  Along with a talent night, a skit night for parents, and a couple of wonderful, spiritual devotionals, it was surely a camp to remember !.

Special thanks to Sister Lynelle Rich, who worked so hard helping Morgan Stake Young Women’s with camp this year.  We are soooo glad they got over their initial, “Who is this crazy lady ?!?”, and bought into many many of her wonderful inspirational ideas.  Also, a BIG thank-you to Sister Annette Streadbeck, and Sister Amanda Thackeray for being such AWESOME camp directors !!  They, along with Sister Kerilynn Barr and Sister Lisa Streadbeck, kept the girls happy and giggling at their transformation into “teenagers” once more !!  Thanks again to all of the girls and leaders who helped to make YW camp 2006 an AWESOME success.

 The Young Women attending Illumination University 2006 were;

Taelyn Gleason: who left early so she could go support Tana at the NHSRA finals in Illinois, but we were sure glad she was there for a couple of days.

Savanna Bryant and Kilee Earl: who really REALLY enjoyed the creek, and who were always going back for MORE!

Bailey Woolsey: who was SOOOO glad she came (and we were too!)
Dani Hammer:  who ended up “talking up” a storm with Deborah !

Kristian Durrant: who was Gwen’s creek floatin’ buddy, and also, quite the practical joker !!

Bailee Kimber, who as the ONLY 2nd year girl there, helped the new Beehives so very much. Thanks Bailee !
Whitni and Anne Robinson: the sisters in camp, who were so good to each other (Lauri tell them to keep it up!)
Kristianna Rose:  Such a sweetheart; we are glad she could work in camp around cheer practice.

Tiffany Olson:  Our favorite YW from FRANCE !!  What a great skit director, and song leader, Love ya Tiff

Sage Duerden:  Was AMAZING – she and Anne had such great attitudes, and the younger girls really look up to them.

Havala Rich:  Ringleader !  She and Kacie and Tiffany were our 3 musketeers.  Thanks girls, for being such a good example.

Kacie Chappell:  She’s OUTRAGEOUS !! She ate some yucky pickled pigs feet on a dare, and we were all pretty impressed (also a little grossed out).

Nikki Glanville:  Always a smile !  Also, first to arrive and helped the leaders set up, Thanks Nikki !

Janessa Rich:  Not always easy to come to camp as a soon to be “senior” – thanks for working around Ed-net, and coming to share your sweet testimony.

Kendra Kimber:  Hiker extraordinaire !  4th year hike (16 miles) 3rd year hike (9 ½ miles)…….. hey Lynelle has ANOTHER hike for you, and she “promises” it is only ……..??? miles.

Deborah Peay and Melissa Olsen:  You both did an AMAZING job as YCL’s (Youth Camp Leaders) and we are sure glad you found time to spend with the 6th ward, while also fulfilling your stake duties.

Landon was ordained an Elder today by his grandfather, Lee Dickson.  Grandpa and Grandma Dickson and Rich were there, along with me and Rog.  Those that stood in the circle were.  Bishop Dwight Gailey of the singles ward, Ernie Durrant (counselor)  Matt Wilson (counselor).  It was a really nice blessing.  I hope Landon realizes the importance of holding the Melchizedek priesthood.  He will baptize and confirm Brayden Rich (Kelly and Michelle’s boy) next Saturday, August 5th.
