February 1980 - From my Journal

February 2, 1980

I really haven't been writing as much as I should in this journal.  I'll try harder.  This is Saturday morning & I'm washing & cleaning my home.  Roger has gone with Bruce to Tooele to cut wood to burn in the new woodburning stoves they're coming out with.  Linda & Bruce have just bought one.  I'd sure like to get one but we probably couldn't put it in this apartment anyway. I've been doing allot of crocheting lately.   I've made 2 blankets for the baby & now I'm starting on a bunting.
Roger's been on unemployment, but he really shouldn't be,  he's worked almost everyday this week.  Layne & him will be doing Uncle Don's house tomorrow.  I wish he wouldn't on a Sunday, but what can I say?  I can't remember if I wrote about us tending Casey about a week ago.  It was SO fun.  It really made me think about Ambure allot.  It brought back so many memories.  I can hardly wait for this little one that is inside of me now.  I only have 2 more months in this pregnancy & only 30 more days to work.  Carol Wilkinson quit yesterday, her boy is due at the end of this month  I can't believe it's February already!  Dad has been to Tucson this past week doing work for the college.  Erika & Grandma Tonks will be going to Florida on the 13th, they are both really excited.  Me & Erika get along so much better since I got married.  I'm teaching her how to crochet one of the blankets I made  . She really catches on fast.  The girls dance is coming up and I think she's gonna ask Kenny Hicks.  Mark has been snomobiling allot lately.  Roger & me went the other night and it was so fun.  I have a doctor appointment.  the 5th, and I've been watching what I've been eating.  I'm gaining too much 148!!  YUCK!!  Well I'd better get back to work at cleaning YUCK!!

February 10, 1980

Today is Sunday.  We went to all of our meetings today.  The cub scouts put on a program in Sacrament meeting.  It was really good.  We spent the rest of the day up to Rich's visiting.  I took up a picture of Ambure that I want made into a pillow.  Aunt Shanna does it.  She made one for LuAnn that's really beautiful.  Roger has still been laid off from work, but he has gone a few days & worked for Dick Parsons.  I went to the doctor Tuesday, he said the heartbeat sounded like a little girl.  I gained 5 pounds. (too much!)  I'm suppose to go back in 2 weeks.  It's only a little ways off now.  There's only 26 more days until I quit work.  I sure hope Roger's back to work by then or we'll sure be hurting for money!

February 16, 1980

This is Saturday morning and I'm all by myself with nothing much to do so I will be writing quite a bit more than I usually write.  Dieter Mudrow is finally here to hook up our dryer with  a 220 electricity line.  It will sure be good to have one (a dryer) for the permanent pressed things, and to make the babies things soft.  I haven't really been bothered without  one, and I'm sure that our electricity bill will go up if I use it like I did down at Andersons, but I have lines here and I'll still continue to use them.
Roger has gone to Tooele again to cut wood for his mom's stove.  I really don't mind him going at all , the only thing that worries me, is that the he'll get hurt while using the chain saw.  But we had family prayer before he left and it seems good to know that Heavenly Father will be with us and protect us.  I have started reading the Book of Mormon and unlike other times, I have gotten past the first chapter.  I am up to the part where Lehi and his family have traveled over desert and ocean and finally reach the promised land.  I usually get up in the mornings at 5:00 a.m. and sit in the tub and read till 6:30  This is the easiest time for me.  Erika and Grandma Tonks left for Florida 4 days ago, and I imagine they're having a wonderful time.  Grandpa Dickson's birthday is tomorrow  the 17th of February. I think he'll be 75 or 76, I'm not sure . Tomorrow we will be very busy in doing what is right. After attending all our meetings, Roger has to help his dad for awhile, and also home teach & go to evaluation meetings.  Also we must find time to go up to Grandpa & Grandma Dicksons.  Mrs. Loosli (our landlady) was taken to the hospital yesterday.  Wednesday while doing sealings in the temple, she fainted and she doesn't seem to have much energy.  Doctor Martineau checked her blood and it was awfully low so they're running tests on her.  I certainly hope it's nothing serious and she can come home soon.  I'm going to make Shirl Loosli a pie today.  I hope he likes cherry!
The church came out with the announcement last week that starting March 2nd, 1980, (first Sunday in March) we're going into block times.  This will combine Relief Society, Priesthood, Primary, Junior Sunday School, Senior Sunday School and Sacrament meeting all together in a 3 hour time block on Sundays.  I know this is an inspired program, and after all the bugs are worked out, it will work well.  I hope that Roger will especially like it, and it might be easier for him to go.  He is becoming so strong and I love him SO much!  Last night he asked if we might be able to buy him some pop, so he wouldn't have to drink beer with all the other guys today.  I'm so proud!!! I just wish that I could help him with his cigarette habit.  He's cut down an awful lot, but he just can't seem to quit completely. But I must remember to be patient with him and not push to hard.
Thursday was Valentines Day, and he got me a beautiful plant.  The leaves are green and  they feel like velvet and it has big red bell shaped flowers blooming on it.  I hope I can keep it alive and growing.  He also got me a card that joked about me not looking too sexy in my condition (7 1/2 months pregnant, HA!) But then he wrote a little saying that we memorized, and that really means allot to both of us. Here it is:

THE YEARS MAY COME, THE YEARS MAY GO,
AND TIMES MAY CHANGE IT'S TRUE.

BUT TIME WILL NEVER CHANGE THE LOVE,
WITHIN MY HEART FOR YOU

When I read it I started crying.  He is always so sweet & thoughtful.  We figured out our income tax last night and it's enough to make us sick.  We're going to wind up paying Federal $109.00 and State $176.00.  It sure is a good thing I'm still working.  I guess that's what part of my last big paycheck will go towards.  When I go back to work on Tuesday, I'll only have 18 more days to work, Hurrah!!

The baby is only a month and a half away.  I can't believe it!  The time has gone so fast!!  It seems that the baby is all I think about anymore, wondering what it looks like, whether it's a boy or girl, and if everything will be okay with it.  I go to the doctor on Wednesday, he's gonna be upset when he sees how much I've gained.  I now weigh 152 pounds.  When I delivered Ambure I weighed 160 pounds.  It's a good thing I'll get to go back to Little Audrey's (Health Spa) for awhile after this baby.

Boy, I sure am writing allot today!  I can't do much else, though, because our electricity is off due to the dryer line being installed.  I guess I'm going to try and nurse this baby again, like I did Ambure.  I will try especially hard and hope I have better luck than I did with Ambure.  We went to those Cesarean childbirth classes and now I'm more scared than ever to go through that again.  I sure hope that the baby is turned the right way and Dr. Godfrey will let me try to have it normally.  It's just that it hurts so much being cut open and healing up again, it's just like a major operation!  Well I guess I'll read the Book of Mormon for awhile since there's no electricity.

January 1980 - from my journal

January 13, 1980

Today is Sunday, January 13, 1980.  For the first time since we've been married (I think), Roger and I have gone to every single meeting we were supposed to attend.  It sure is a GOOD feeling.
Roger is out home teaching with Chet Adams tonight, so I'm all alone for awhile.  I thought it would be a good time to start writing in this journal.  This morning Roger got up when the alarm rang at 8:00,  he bathed & shaved for Priesthood without me even suggesting it.  He's really changing allot!  For the better.
We just love this ward (Morgan 4th).  The people are so nice & friendly, and already we've had our own home teachers drop by.  They are Stan Rees and Kyle Porter.  They're the first home teachers we've had since we got married.  I put a roast in the oven before we left for priesthood meeting and Sunday morning Relief Society.
Roger just loves priesthood.  Steve Carrigan is the Elder's Quorum teacher and Rog really enjoys the lessons.  I also like Relief Society.  Ardath Peterson taught the lesson today. It was on immunizing your kids.  These are mostly older ladies who all work in the class and I'm the youngest of them all.  But I still really enjoy it.
At 11:00 we went to Sunday School.  I just love to watch all the little kids who Ambure would have been just like right now.  I can hardly wait until this little baby I have inside me is born.  I hope and pray that every thing will be all right.  I don't know if I could take losing another baby.
We had a very good Sunday dinner.  Roast, scalloped potatoes, and creamed corn.  It's pretty fun having one big meal a week, even if it's just the two of us.
Sacrament meeting was very good.  The Gerald Anderson family talked on reading the scriptures.  It was really inspirational and I'd like to try to get me and Roger reading the Book of Mormon tonight.  We were asked to go and meet with the bishop tonight.  Rog and I were both pretty scared.  I thought I would probably be asked to serve in a position.  First Bishop Scott Rees and one of his counselors, Dave Rich just talked to us and asked us allot of questions.  I really like them both, they are both so strong in the church.  The bishop finally asked us if we would speak in sacrament meeting next week.  I thought Roger was just going to die.  I'm really scared to talk, but at least I've given talks when I was a little girl, but Roger has never even given a talk in his life.  But I was so surprised and so PROUD.  He said yes!!  And now, tonight, he is here sitting on the loveseat trying to decide what he wants to say and how to say it!
I love him so much, he is so good  in so many ways, and he is the kind of father I know our kids will be proud to have.  I know that someday he will take me to the temple where we can be sealed for all eternity to Ambure and all our other children!

January 14, 1980

Today has been a good day.  Getting up out of bed was pretty hard, but I made it.  Boy it sure rained HARD last night.  It woke me up about 2:40 a.m.  It seems I always wake up around 3:00, it must be the baby's fussy time because he sure is moving around allot  .(Roger gets a big "kick" out of it)
Mr. & Mrs. Loosli left this morning for a weeks vacation in Nevada.  I'm suppose to water her plants and look after the house while they're gone.  Work wasn't too bad at work today. The baby afghan is coming along really good, but it looks too much like a little girl's so I'm in trouble if I have a boy.  I made homemade pancakes tonight for supper, they were delicious!  But Roger didn't want too many because he has a basketball game at 8:30.  That's where he is now.
Malan Johnson came over tonight.  He sure is a good friend of ours.  I wish he could find himself a girlfriend and get married.  It's just what he needs.
I had a really good talk with Heavenly Father tonight. For the first time in a long while  I felt his spirit very close to me.

January 17, 1980

I thought I better write a quick note.  It seems we've been so busy lately. We've invited Chet & Joan Adams over for tacos and cherry pie tonight.  Roger has church ball tonight.  We've been working on our talks for Sunday in sacrament meeting.  Rog is really changing, I can't believe it .  Tithing is the FIRST thing now.  I'm so glad.  I've almost got the baby afghan finished.  Just putting on the edging now.  Tomorrow we're going to B-Mart to get paneling and things to fix up the house.  Only 50 more days of work!!  YAH !!

January 20, 1980

Today was a special day (Sunday).  Roger and I had to talk in Sacrament meeting.  It was a very scary experience, but I'm so glad we had the opportunity.  We've really changed this past week.  We've started praying together and individually, and also reading the Doctrine & Covenants.  We pay a full tithing now, and Roger is the one who sees it's getting paid.  He has really changed, and when he talked today, I was so proud of him I could burst.  We've both got a long way to go, but we'll make it and Ambure will be ours and we will be each others forever!  Tomorrow is work again, YUK!  I'm becoming more and more uncomfortable in my pregnancy.  Only 2 1/2 more months, I can hardly wait!!  A new little spirit in the house will be nice.

January 28, 1980

I haven't written lately.  Been really busy.  Roger went on unemployment 1-25-80.  Sheetrocking is just completely slowed down.  I'm almost 7 months pregnant now and I'm sticking out more and more.  Only 39 more days to work!!  I wanted to go down to the Deseret Industries and get a rocking chair, but Rog has to work tomorrow.  I'm working on a baby Indian afghan now.  Mrs. Loosli gave me the pattern.  It's really cute.  Current events in the world are the IRAN crisis, the hostage have already been held 80-90 days.   Also the Russians invading Afghanistan.  Roger's bugging me to turn off the light.

1979 - From my journal

1979

1979??** No date, but I think it might have been after Ambure died**
Gwen, I love you so much, that words cannot tell you.  I hope someday we can be a happy family, because we both deserve to be happy, and I want to be happy with you.  Everything will work out.  I am sure that our Father in heaven knows best, and I know it is hard for you, but honey, I am always here for you night or day.  Please lean on me.  I need it as much as you do.  Put this little note in your purse so that when you are not with me, and you feel blue, you can look at it and feel better, because I know it is hard.  Gwen, I love you from the bottom of my heart.  Roger

January - I started working at Browning Arms Co.  I worked in the Cash department with Carol Thackeray (soon to be Mrs. Dan Wilkinson),Shirlee Richins Matthews (later divorced), Julie Jones, Kay O'Driscoll, Judy Hebdon and Connie Worden.  Kevin Thredgold was my boss.  I remember that during the month of December I had been looking for a job, and it so happened that I had an interview at Brownings the day after Ambure's funeral.  Diane Smith (Coach Smith's wife) also worked there, and pulled a few strings so that I could interview.  I met with Kevin Thredgold, and he had already been briefed about what had happened with Ambure.  I know he felt sorry for me, and offered me the job on the spot.  I didn't have any 10-key adding machine experience at all, but he gave me one to take home and practice on, and I started working there two weeks later.  I have always had a soft spot in my heart for Kevin.  Knowing that he was really taking a chance by hiring me, when I didn't know squat!

March - We got a new truck.  It was a 1978 cream and maroon short-bed Chevy.  I had been driving our 1972 Ford when I wrecked with Ambure, and it was totaled.  Bruce fixed it up, and sold it for us.

April - Layne and Susan got married.

May - I graduated from Morgan High School.

June - We went on vacation with the Rich's again to Lava Hot Springs.  This is the vacation where we drove back down through Preston, and then over to Liberty.  We camped up St. Charles Canyon, and went to Minnetonka Caves.

June – Grandpa and Grandma Tonks celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, and I sat at their guest book.

July - I got pregnant with Mandy.

October – Halloween costume party at Bruce and Linda’s.  I dressed as an old fat black man, and Roger dressed at a girl in pig-tails.

December - We moved to Loosli's at 331 N. 700 E.  I was working with Carol Wilkinson at this time, and her husband's (Dan Wilkinson) grandma had just died.  She had been living in the one side of Shirl and Leora Loosli's duplex.  I called immediately, and was able to get this apartment for us.  Shirl & Leora only charged us $100.00 a month rent, for the whole 5 years that we lived there.  This is the home where Mandy and Zac came home to after being born.  I have a lot of fond memories of this place.  It had a big living room, 2 bedrooms (one was microscopic), a bathroom, kitchen, back porch, and basement (unfinished).  We had to do all of the yard work and lawn mowing as part of our rent agreement.  Right next door was the home of Mrs. Terry.  She died soon after we moved there, and our good friends Joan and Chet Adams bought her house.  We had great times being neighbors.  Our kids were the same ages, and played together.

Old pics - Memories from 42 years ago (June 1978)

Throwback to 1978 - June (written in 2020)
This is a Relief Society get together for moms and daughters in the cultural hall that used to be next to the Rock Church.  I actually have NO MEMORY of this day.  David Webster (who works as Morgan County's building inspector), brought me these pictures from his mom's scrapbook.  She (Carol Ann Webster) was the Relief Society President of the 2nd ward.

Sherrie Mecham (now Rich) in the striped sweater vest, Alicia Nalder (Coach Nalder's wife) and me - that short haired girl on the end.
Me, Mom and Kuk
Mom is 41 years old here in this picture.
I'm 17, and Erika is 15
Tammy Tucker, Deanna Mecham (Sherrie's Mom) - Sherrie, and Me
Erika and Mom...........and who is that on Mom's lap?
That's our baby girl Ambure !
This is a picture I had never ever seen before.
This is a TENDER MERCY - so unexpected !

You may notice that Ambure has her little cast on her legs (because of her congenital hip dislocation).  She got this cast off a few days later, on June 12th.

Isn't it so funny that I have no recollection of this day at all ?!
Thank goodness for pictures, and unexpected memories.

1978 - From my journal

1978

I was due with Ambure on February 23rd, but she was two weeks late.  She was footling breech, which means feet first, and had to be delivered  by caesarean section.  I went into labor 1 1/2 days before I was scheduled to be C-sectioned.  Back in 1978, the dad's weren't allowed to come in the operating room when the baby was born by C-section.  I was really scared.  At 11:43 a.m. on the morning of March 8, 1978, we had a  beautiful baby girl.  Ambure didn't have a mark on her little body or face.  She was very beautiful, with her dark black eyes and brown hair.  Ambure's doctor was Dr. Jerry Gardner.  He and Dr. Merrill Godfrey delivered her.  She weighed 9 pounds 2 ounces, and was 20 1/2 inches long.  She was sure a big baby, probably  because she was two weeks overdue!  We sure loved little Ambure because she was our first baby, and she was very special.  We decided to name her Ambure because we had this name picked about for a long time.  We wanted to spell it AMBURE instead of AMBER, because we wanted it to be different.   I tried to breast feed Ambure, but was too nervous, and after six miserable days, we switched to formula.  After that, things got MUCH better.  Ambure was a very good baby right from the start.  She was sleeping completely through the night when she was only a week old (the same day/night we put her on the bottle).  She was smiling and following movement with her eyes by 2 weeks old.  On Friday, March 31st, when Ambure was 3 weeks and 2 days old she had a doctor’s appointment.  She weighed 9 pounds 14 ounces, and was 21 inches long.  It was at this appointment that we discovered she had a dislocated left hip.  We felt so bad about this, because we didn't want her to have to go through any hard times or pain.  They sent us to another doctor (Dr. Franklin Stuart), and he arranged for her to get a cast put on the following Tuesday. (April 4, 1978)  They would be putting her under anesthesia in the operating room at McKay Dee Hospital.  They would be “setting” her hip in the correct place, and then casting her in a body cast to keep it in place.

We wanted to get her blessed before this happened, so two day later on Sunday, April 2, 1978, Ambure was given a name and a blessing in the Morgan 2nd ward by her grandfather, Wilden Lee Dickson.  She was given a special blessing that she would grow up healthy without any hip problems, and that her parents would someday take her to the temple and be sealed together as a family for all eternity.  Those who participated in the blessing were her dad, Roger Rich, her other grandfather, DeLore (Ben) Rich, a great grandfather, Reed Dickson, and Wallace Green.

On April 4th, when she was almost 1 month old, she got her first cast on.  It was a full body cast that fit her just like a starched pair of pants with the crotch cut out.  She really adapted to it quite well, and was still as good natured as ever.  She had this first cast on for four weeks, and then it was changed for a bigger one because she was growing.  Ambure was laughing out loud at 6 weeks, and recognizing her mom and dad.  It was about this time she discovered her hands.  She got her 2nd cast on May 2nd, using the same procedure as before.   She wore this cast for 6 weeks.  In early June of 1978 we went for a vacation with Grandpa and Grandma Rich and Joni and Kelly, and Linda and Bruce Frost and their family.  We went to Lava Hot Springs. Ambure couldn't get in the water because of her cast, but she sure was a good baby, and sleeping with her mom and dad in the trailer didn't bother her one little bit.  Right after we got home from Lava, Ambure's 2nd cast was removed on June 12th.   It was so good to see her little legs again!   Within 4 days she was rolling over !!  What a SMART baby !! Dr. Stuart, her hip doctor, was concerned because her hip was still dislocated and hadn’t stayed in place like it should have.  He wanted to operate on her, but we decided to take Ambure to Dr. Coleman, an orthopedic specialist in Salt Lake City.   Dr. Coleman fixed Erika Dickson's (Ambure's aunt) hip when she was a baby (15 years before).  Dr. Coleman prescribed a Pavlic harness for little Ambure's hip.  She got this on June 19th.  At first she hated it, but she soon got used to it and was a happy baby once more. This Pavlic harness held Ambure's legs in a frog like position, and as she would kick against the harness, it would naturally push her hip back into the socket where it was supposed to be.  Ambure wore this harness for 6 ½ months, but at every check-up her hip was still not back in the socket far enough.

Ambure was very smart baby.  She learned very quickly. Even with her harness, she was sitting at 5 ½ months, and crawling at 6 months.   She was always quick to smile and slow to cry.  Ambure was a good eater, and would eat most anything we gave her.  She was waving bye-bye  at 7 months, and loved to patty cake, bounce to music (Happy Days), and play peek-a-boo.   Ambure got all 4 of her front teeth (top and bottom) when she was 7 months old.  She sure had a cute smile.  Ambure loved to visit her Great Grandpa and Grandma Dickson, and loved their dog Sally.  Grandpa and Grandma watched her for a couple of hours in the mornings while I attended school to finish up my senior year.    At 9 months, Ambure was 32 inches long, and weighed 21 pounds.  She had the darkest eyes, and you could hardly see the pupils in them.  Ambure’s hair was dark brown, and was a curly cap all over her little head.  We had a wonderful Christmas that year, and it was so fun to have a little one to buy toys for.  Three days after Christmas, on December 28, 1978, Ambure’s Great Grandma Thelma White died of a heart attack.  Two days after that, on December 30th – our sweet little angel Ambure was killed in a car accident.

Roger switched jobs, and was hanging drywall with his brother Layne during 1978.  They worked for Ted Hansen Drywall, and Parson's Drywall. Roger switched jobs while I was in the hospital after having Ambure.  What a time to change!!

We wanted to do allot of camping with Linda & Bruce, so we bought a trailer.  It was an older one, and I can't remember how much we paid for it, but we had it when we went to Lava in June of 1978.  I remember that Roger's mom co-signed with us, and had the payments taken out of her paycheck, and then we paid her back.  I can't remember when we sold this for sure, but we didn't have it too long.

We also had a 1972 1/2 ton Ford truck 4WD.  Roger had this truck when we got married.  I remember during the summer of 1978, Layne borrowed it, and wrecked it up by Ansta Florence's home.

That summer we moved from the upstairs apartment at Walker's, down to the bottom-right apartment.  We bought a Kirby vacuum during this time. The guy knew a couple of suckers when he saw us.  It was a good vacuum, but $400.00 on a payment plan was a little steep for us at that time.  We were too naive to know this, and to say no.

This downstairs apartment consisted of a long narrow living room in the front of the home, and then a narrow hallway and bedroom in the middle, and the kitchen and bathroom at the back.  There was also an enclosed porch which could double as a bedroom at the very back, however we just used it for storage.  We only lived here for about 3 or 4 months.

In November/December of  1978, we moved down to Milton to 2526 N. Morgan Valley Dr. in Frank and Lois Anderson's rental.  This was a cute little green house. (it has since been demolished)   It had a living room and bedroom in the front, and the kitchen, other bedroom, and bathroom in the back.  There was also a washer/dryer hook up.  This was a first for us, as we had been using my mom's and Grandma Dickson's up until this time.  We didn't have enough money to buy the washer and dryer though, but after Ambure was killed we got about $2,000 in life insurance.  We used this money to buy a washer/dryer, an upright freezer, and a bedroom set which we still have today.

We bought a red Maverick car so I could drive back and forth to Morgan while Rog was at work.

While I was pregnant with Ambure (during my Junior year) I didn't go to regular high school, except for a young mother's class that was given for all of us pregnant teenagers.  I got credit for this class, and also worked at the drive-in and got credit for this also.  When my senior year started in the fall of 1978, I went to regular high school in the mornings.  I remember I took a Health class, and also was in the Warrior Staff class. (School newspaper)  I also went to night school.   In January of 1979 I started at Browning working full-time.  I also continued going to night school, and was able to graduate with my class in May of 1979

December 28, 1978  Roger's Grandma Thelma White died.  Grandma White died of a heart attack in her home.  She was about 64 years old.  Two days later, Ambure died.

I was working for my Uncle Ray Whitaker at his meat shop wrapping meat that day.  Rog must have been working too, and Ambure was at my mom and dad's being baby-sat.  After I got off work I picked her up and went up to LuAnn and Ben's.  I remember that Kelly and I drove LuAnn's car down to Morgan to the car wash to wash it.  It was really really cold.  Ambure had been laid down for a nap at LuAnn's.  When I got back there, I got Ambure, got things loaded up in the 1972 Ford truck, and headed down to Morgan.  I think I was supposed to meet Roger at a service station, where the Chicken Hut is now.  Ambure was sitting in an old black vinyl and metal car seat, (unsafe by today's standards) but she was not buckled into the car seat, and the car seat was not buckled to the seat of the truck.  She had a little white polyester jumper on, that Grandma Dickson had made for her, and a little lavendar onesie, and her blue and white furry coat she had just gotten for Christmas.  I  remember that she was kind of fussing, and crying, and I put the pacifier in her mouth and told her I loved her.  I'm glad I can say that that was the last thing I ever said to her.  As we were coming around the hill on Kilbourn's hill heading towards Morgan and I got too far over in my lane (because a car was coming the other direction, I moved over more than I should have).  My front right truck tire hit a big rock which had rolled off the mountain, it was a little larger than a bowling ball I think, and it blew the tire.  It basically twisted the tire, which twisted the steering wheel and I drove right up the hill (to my right).  The truck flipped over onto it's top, skidded along the road, and finally stopped in a shallow gully.  I remember as we were sliding along the road, the terrible sound of the asphalt against the roof of the truck, and just praying that we wouldn't go over the other side (left) which was a drop off.  After the truck stopped, I was kind of shaken up.  I remember getting my bearings, and looking for Ambure.  All I could see of her was her little legs.  I tried pulling them to get her out, but she wouldn't budge.  I couldn't see anything but her legs, and I couldn't move her.  A man had come running back from the corner (he had been parked there looking at something), and I remember screaming for him to get my baby out.  Just then,   Paul and Vanna Carter and their family stopped. (They had been coming from Morgan)  I remember that they had their daughter run down over the side of the mountain to a house to call the ambulance, and Paul ran around to the other side of the truck to help the man get Ambure out.  I remember I didn't want to look on the other side of the truck.  I didn't know what horrible sight I might see.  Leon and Donna Carter pulled up by this time, and it was so cold, I got in their car and sat with Donna.  I was upset,  and was just sure that Ambure was dead.  I remember saying that she would be buried with her Great Grandma White.  I was rambling really bad.  Somehow, someone had gotten word to Ben and LuAnn, and they had driven down.  I remember LuAnn sitting with me in the car, and I remember that Ben had gone around to the other side of the truck to see about getting Ambure out.  When he came back over he was bawling like a baby.  He was so upset he couldn't talk, and all he could do was cry and shake his head back and forth.   I remember LuAnn was really upset to see Ben bawling.   I have never seen him that upset since.  After the ambulance got there, they still couldn't get her out.  The fire engine had to come, and they had to use the “jaws of life” to get her out.  By this time I was in the ambulance, and also someone had gotten Roger from Morgan and he was there with me in the front of the ambulance.  I remember that Roger Wangsgard was driving and JoAnne and Glen Allgood were the ambulance attendants.  I can remember that they finally got Ambure out of the truck  after about 30 minutes.  They carried her to the ambulance, holding her underneath her arms, and there wasn't any blood or anything.  Me and Roger stayed in the front of the ambulance, and it headed to Morgan.  We did not go to the hospital though, but over to Dr. Martineau's office.  I guess they knew that Ambure was dead for sure, and that going to the hospital was not going to help.  Ben and LuAnn had to go back home to get Kelly, and someone had told my mom and dad too, and somehow there was a mix-up and they all ended up heading to Ogden to McKay-Dee Hospital because that is where they thought we would be.  My dad was a bishop at this time, and he had been going to marry someone, but he left the ceremony, and someone else had to do it.  At the doctor's office, they took Ambure back into a room, and me and Rog sat in the waiting room. My Grandpa and Grandma Dickson and Aunt Maisie were there too.  I remember the doctor came out and told us that the baby was dead.  I asked him "What did she die of?", and he said, "You were in a car accident."  As if I didn't know!  I meant WHAT had she died of, did she suffer, etc.  Roger was crying, and everything was a blur. My Grandpa Dickson was crying and kept asking why an old man like him couldn’t have died, and not my sweet baby.  I remember the doctor wanted to check me over, but I was too upset, and only wanted to see my baby.  We went back into the room where Ambure was.  She was laying on the table.  She had a goose-egg on her forehead, and on her stomach was a bruise also.  She had some petekial hemorrage marks on her neck too.  They asked me if I wanted to hold her, and so I did – but not long enough.  We were so young and DUMB !  Knowing what I know now, I would have told the doctor and nurse and ambulance attendants, and mortician to leave the room, and just let us sit there and hold our baby.  But before I was really ready, Kraig Walker was taking her and wrapping her in a sheet, and putting her in the back of the mortuary station wagon.  Aunt Maisie, and Grandpa and Grandma Dickson took Rog and I over to mom and dad’s to wait for them to get back from Ogden.  It was so sad.  When my parents got back, my dad came over to us and told us over and over that this was NOT the end, and we could have Ambure again someday.  That made us feel a little better.  We stayed at mom and dad’s that night, and I remember we thought we wouldn’t get much sleep, but amazingly we did.  That night for the first time in our married life, Roger wanted to kneel and say a prayer together.  He asked Heavenly Father to take care of our little girl.  The next morning when I first woke up, in that first instant I didn’t remember what had happened, but then it all comes back, and all you can think is, “ I wish I could just make time turn back, so that it had never happened”.  Grandma White had died on Thursday, Ambure on Saturday, and Grandma White’s viewing was on Sunday night, her funeral on Monday, and Ambure’s viewing on Monday night, and funeral on Tuesday.  It was an unreal week.  The day after Ambure’s funeral I went for a job interview at Browning, and two weeks later I was at work full-time.  Just like that, our lives had changed.  At the time we thought we would never be happy again, but as the saying goes, “time heals all things”, and sure enough it does.  One year and four months after Ambure died, Amanda was born, and 17 months after that, along came Zac, and in 1988 our caboose – Landon Lee.  On December 12, 1987, nine years after we lost our little one, our family was sealed together for time and all eternity in the Ogden Temple.  I know without a single doubt, that Ambure lives on with our Heavenly Father.  I believe that she was too pure and too perfect to live on this earth.  One day, if we live worthy enough, we will be able to raise her again to adulthood.  We will be able to hold her in our arms once more, and her little hip will be made whole, and she won’t have to worry about being crippled, or any of the other worries that we experience here in this earth life.  We look forward to that day.

PATROL SAYS BABY KILLED IN ROLLOVER
MORGAN- The Utah Highway Patrol Tuesday, released details of a weekend accident in which a 9-month-old Morgan girl was killed.  The patrol said the car, driven by Mrs. Gwen Rich, 18, 2526 N. Morgan Valley Drive, Morgan, was going north on SR 66 in Porterville at 5 p.m.  Saturday, when it went out of control on a turn.  A tire on the car blew out, and the car rolled over.  The child, Ambure Rich, 9 months, was pinned inside the truck.

My mom and Erika and some others went to Disney World in Florida during 1978.  I don't know for sure which month they went.  My Aunt Dawna had married a man named Fred Nachman (I think the same year I was married) and was living there.  They went to visit her.

1977 - From my Journal

1977

Half-way through my sophomore year (January 1977), I just kind of pooped out of everything!  I dropped choir, and even though I was still in drill-team, me and Joan Adams (my cousin) and Cindy Nelson were the rebels.  I did try out for Varsity Cheerleader for the next year, (my Junior year) and made it, along with Debi Ball, Kaley Jensen, Marci Peterson, Susan Burraston, and Pauline Preece.

I went to an L.D.S. Youth Conference in Provo the first week of June, and missed my first period.  I just KNEW that I was pregnant.  I was 16 years old.  Boy was I scared to tell my parents!!  Roger told his sister Lynette, and she arranged for me to take a pregnancy test at the hospital.  Sure enough, it was positive.  Roger was working at Hobart at the Freeport Center at this time.  He was doing sheet-metal work, making dishwashers, refrigerators, etc.  I drove over from Lynette's to tell him.  We were both pretty scared, and decided we would tell our parents that night.  Of course, we both told our mothers, I didn't dare tell  my dad!  You can imagine they were pretty upset about it, more so than either Rog or myself.  As kids, you just don't realize what you are getting into.  You paint the world rosy, and think everything will work out just beautifully.  I ended up quitting cheerleading of course, and was replaced by another girl.

We were married on July 14, 1977  and had our reception one week later on July 22nd.  Bishop Francis Webster married us on my mom and dad's back patio.  The next week when we were supposed to have the reception in my mom and dad's yard, it poured down rain.  We had the wedding line in the carport (with the grease stains and all) and  the presents were in the living room, and the refreshments were downstairs.  I guess it worked out all right.  I wasn't bothered at the time, but looking back on it, it was kind of a mess I guess.

The summer I HAD to get married (That was the way you phrased it in those days) there were also a bunch of other girls in the same predicament.  7 of us total.  We all married the dad's, because this is what you did in 1977.

As of this date, (2002 - when I compiled this), only 3 of the 7 couples are still married.    Thank goodness Rog and I are still together.  It has been a rocky 25 years together.  It is true what they say about young marriages being hard, and the divorce rate high.

Roger and I lived in a basement apartment on about 40th and Madison in Ogden for the first 3 weeks of our married life.  We both hated it.    We moved back to Morgan in August, and stayed at my mom's house while they were on vacation to California. We were waiting until an upstairs apartment was ready.  It was located in a house that was at 10 S. 200 E.  This house was made into 3 apartments.  We lived in the top one.  This house is no longer standing.  It was torn down to make way for a parking lot for Bob Walker's 8-plex's.  This little apartment will always be special to me.  It had slanted ceilings, and the stove was a little two burner that needed to be lighted with a match each time it was used.  It had one bedroom in the apartment, and another across the hall at the top of the stairs that we used for storage.  This is the home we brought Ambure home to.

Our first year of married life was ROCKY.  I look back now, and can't believe we made it.  There is NO WAY I would do it over again.  When we got married, my mom and dad gave us their old dark green Ford Galaxy 500.  That fall, I had driven over to mom's to get some bottled fruit.  I stacked the jars on the floor of the car, and as I pulled out of their driveway, they tipped over.  I bent down to straighten them, while still driving down the road.  I looked up just in time to see the car hit a telephone pole right on their street.  It broke the pole right in half, and it was boinging up and down. I hit my lip on the steering wheel, and it was bleeding.  I was okay.  Verl Mecham had been driving down Young Street at the exact moment that I hit the pole, and he came back to see if I was okay.  I was bawling, and he called the police and took me home to Roger.  Me and Roger drove back over to get things straightened out. My mom and dad were over to a football game, and Verl went and got them. We had to pay $100.00 to the city for a new telephone pole, and the damage it did to the car was about $200 or $300 dollars.  It was the pits.  We gave the car to Barclay Earl the next summer, and he drove it in the demolition derby.

I worked at Jay's Drive Inn (now Steph's) during the days.  This helped to bring in some extra money, but I sure put on the pounds eating fries, etc.  I worked there until about a month before Ambure was born.

1976 - From my Journal

1976

I turned 15 on January 9, 1976.   Roger had his Aunt Clara Beth make me a birthday cake.   Roger was wrestling at this time, and was having a hard time enjoying it.  He had wrestled all through high school, but now with a new coach, Louie Molen, he HATED IT.   Roger quit the team, and all of the players quit with him.   He was having a hard time all-around, and we broke up during February and March.

After wrestling was over,  we got back together, and  we ended up going to the Junior Prom together.  It was neither of our's Junior Prom.  My mom made me a beautiful blue dress with lace sleeves.  We had fun, but I really don't remember too much about it.

Roger went on work release at Schumacher's wood plant the rest of the school year, and I hardly ever saw him.  I do remember that we were together at the State Games for basketball that year in Salt Lake City.  A whole bunch of kids from Morgan stayed in the same hotel together.  I stayed with the Debi Ball, Deanne Christensen, and Marci Peterson, ( I think).  Roger stayed with Haz (Rodney Haslam) and some others.  At first we stayed at the Royal Inn, next to Subway on 300 West and North Temple.  Then, some of the Morgan boys got kicked out of their rooms, and moved to what is now the Shilo Inn on 2nd South and West Temple.  We moved too, of course.

Roger graduated in May, and it was really hard to think of going to school without him being there.  I can't remember too much about that summer.  I do know that it just wasn't the same as the summer before.  When you are hooked up with ONE guy, things are allot different.

When school started, I was a sophomore!!  I had made the drillteam, and was performing at half-time during football season.  I remember we went to the State games and the University of Utah Rice Stadium, and performed there.   Rog took me to the girl's dance that year, but we didn't go to the Junior Prom this time. We also went down to Provo to the Basketball State games this year. Roger and I were pretty close during my sophomore year and I wasn't doing my best in school, and my whole set of friends had changed.  I hung out with Cindy Nelson (from the drill-team) and Noreen and Doreen Wynn (twins) and Tami Carter.  We were kind of rebels I guess.  I was really fighting with my mom and dad allot, my dad especially!! .  I was in the "Music Man" production in the fall, because I was in the Accapella Choir.  I had made one of the four high sopranos chosen.
